Snow leopard (osx version 10.6) has just been released and now all of the macs come with it. Yes you can upgrade the operating systems, i upgraded my macbook from 10.5 to 10.6, i think it is easier to upgrade osx then it is windows. The models are upgraded more frequently then the operating system. A new line of models have recently been released so it will be a few months before the next lineup is released, but don't worry too much about it becoming outdated too quiclly because they are only small changes, eg the only difference from my macbook is that i have a 2ghz processor and the new one has a 2.1ghz and the new one has a 40gb larger hard drive. I think that windows based hardware out dates faster then macs because my sister has a 3 year old macbook and it looks the same as my 6 month old one, and it still works well except her battery only lasts for about 2 hours now where it used to go for 4 but that is still good for a 3 year old laptop battery
