Introducing the Xcore86 and new Gecko Edubook

Author: Administrator | Files under Operating Systems

The Xcore86 is a new Device on Chip that features a full x86 computer on a single chip. This video shows how the Xcore86 can be used to power future handheld devices that will be able to run existing x86 operating systems such as Windows and Linux. Also shown is the upcoming new Gecko Edubook. The Gecko Edubook is the least expensive 8.9 inch screen x86 netbook available. It is also fanless, features standard rechargable AA NiMH batteries and can be booted from a standard SD or 2.5 inch hard disk.

    I have never heard …
I have never heard ANY computer sound like a helicopter. LMAO! (Though i’ve heard disk servers that sounded like jets taking off.)

The keyboard looks to be identical to my Eee PC 900—a horrible keyboard with the numeral row terribly misaligned, amongst other annoyances. I hate it! I hope that they change that (as Asus did with the later Eee PCs)

The AA capability is a definite plus! 10 years on, you’ll be able to get batteries for it without jumping through hoops and paying through the nose!

    This is very …
This is very interesting, perhaps the first reasonably priced netbook…

Anyway, I have a few question:
First of all: How does the Xcore86 processor compare to say, the Intel Atom Z-series in terms of performance?
What kind of graphics solution do you use, is there some form of OpenGL/DirectX-based 3D acceleration and video decode offloading?
And is there an additional video output?

    At last somebody …
At last somebody that thinks !
It’s the first time that i see the Gecko netbook.

Dude… The designers deserve the Nobel Prize in Ecology, Practicity and Economy.
I hope sooner this beauties are available in my country, Argentina. And i’m very glad with the compatibility with linux also.

I still thinking this is not real !!! No annoying coolers, no mechanical parts (this things eats a lot of energy), and “WITH STANDARD BATTERIES”?

I think i will to touch the heaven. Sorry my english.

I like that the CPU …
I like that the CPU / motherboard module is so easy to access and swap. When a better spec module comes out you can just upgrade it while keeping your screen / everything else! Great stuff, I want one.

    The new Gecko …
The new Gecko Edubook will be no more than $195.00 configured with WIFI, batteries, and 8 GB solid state. For large projects in developing countries where we are only providing the barebones netbook and help source the other components, the total price could be under $150.00.
Given the easier to support battery, modular design and rugged / fanless design, there are other benefits other than just price.

    I have had a lot of …
I have had a lot of comments on the video quality. The unit in this video was the very first prototype which we had to ship to Africa for evaluation the very next day. I only had the unit in my hands for a few hours. We are now shipping out pre production units to potential dealers and partners and the final units should ship in August. We are very interested in all Education projects.

    Well, it sounds …
Well, it sounds like a very very promising machine (I mean the Gecko), but PLEASE… choose an appropriate scenario for the video next time… maybe a white background, good lightening, good sound etc.
The Brazilian government is always looking for good and cheap machines (for educational programs), maybe it can be a good opportunity for your company, not only here.

    regards.

    We have had several …
We have had several contacts from Nivio but nothing definite. The Power supply is internal. The system draws 8 watts or so. I am not sure what you are asking about video. We are not promoting the device for movie playing. There is no video acceleration on board the CPU.

    this was an …
this was an excellent idea and i’m very pleased that the company was able to get it off the ground at the stated price point. i wish them all the success in the world; i especially hope that low-middle income developing countries pick this up in mass quantities and gain the costs savings from low power usage and using linux distributions.

I think that $200 is for barebones system (he don’t tell it in video)

When include other device like SSD, Web Camera, Wifi and Windows XP Home it’s might be too expensive – only xp home cost about $80 -

And he just tell us that $200 is include WIFI and SSD.

Firstly, he is actually the CEO of Norhtec, not an actor. I have bought a Gecko Edubook from his company and it came with Windows XP,which is usable but rather slow as it is on other netbooks as well. At my request, they happily sold me an 8Gb SD card with Watt OS installed on it for less than I would pay at the supermarket for a blank SD. Now I have a dual-boot Windows/Linux netbook with good wifi and sound. It is a robust machine and the AA batteries are a huge bonus. On a recent visit to a house without any electricity supply, I took the Edubook and two other netbooks. One ran 3 hours, the second did 4 hours and the Edubook, with spare batteries finally expired after 12 hours. If I had a solar charger it would have gone on and on. However, putting an OS on the Gecko is not so simple. It needs more knowledge than I have, but the people at Norhtec are so helpful and the two internal SD sockets allow experimentation without disaster. I love it and hope others buy them too.
