Upgrade, mmmm its a good idea. You should think of your system also, This kind of idea doesn't work if your machine is an old one, and you want to upgrade only from software version, thats is not going to help.

Before doing upgradation of your software side, just get any trial version of Windows 7 and try it in your system(make your system as multi operated system), if your system is running as good as the old OS, then it would be the nice decision. If it is not running, then you probably have done the worse thing.
NOTE: because of multi OS, your system may be slow, but you'll to know about your systems compatibility. To know your systems compatibility, read the time, which your vista is to login, and also in multi OS. Check the time's....... if the timing is approximately few seconds late, then you can go for the upgradation or else not.

If your system is running good, then you can order your Windows 7 CD, by simply sending the request to Microsoft.com with your original Vista Key for upgradation.(Ofcourse, you need to pay the some amount)
References :
Always backup your data before making any change to your OS. And yes, you will need a CD/DVD of Windows 7 to install it. Or you chek for online upgrade at:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/genius.aspx

One important thing, check your system for compatibility with windows 7 before doing any changes.Follow this link:

All you need is a Windows 7 upgrade disc to safely migrate to the new Operating System. A backup is always recommended, but not necessary as Windows does not erase your documents/files during Installation unless you explicitly choose to format your hard drive.

If you bought your computer after June of last year, you may be entitled to a free upgrade to Windows 7 in which case you should contact your PC's manufacturer for more details.
